The Honorable Ambassador R. S. Lauder
Embassy of the United States of America
A1091 Vienna, Austria
Greeting and Blessing:
Thank you very much for your letter of October 23, 1987.
I appreciate your thoughtfulness also in passing along to me a copy of the book, Strangers in Their Own Land1.
I was impressed with your warm sentiments - indeed, resolute commitment - to aid Jewish communities in Europe, and especially Jews now living in your native Austria, "struggling to preserve their identity, culture and future" (to quote from your letter).
It is truly gratifying to note your pride as a Jew of Austro-Hungarian ancestry, and your concern also as an American who Divine Providence has elevated to such an exalted position, offering unusual opportunities to help your fellow-Jews.
Indeed, our representatives heading the Chabad-Lubavitz organiztion in Vienna have kept me informed of your supportive interest in their work. I am glad to have this opportunity to convey to you our personal appreciation.
With prayerful wishes for Hatzlocho in your public as well as private affairs, and
With esteem and blessing,
