M. Schneerson
P.S. I take this opportunity to express my pleasure at having met you personally, and on such an auspicious occasion as after the first Selichos. I was particularly pleased to see you accompanied by your son-in-law and nephew. In the light of the emphasis of the Torah, especially of Chasidus, on the harmony between the older and younger generations, through the best possible Chinuch of the youngsters, It was very gratifying to see you all together. And together with the prayerful wish for a Kesivo vaChasimo Tovo, I want to articulate the special wish that you should always be seen together with your children and grandchildren, and son-in-law and daughters-in-law, without any generation gap, etc., and in places similar to the one we met last Motzaei Shabbos in Shul.
The occasion had further significance in that it served as a follow-up in the matter of that terrible decree of "Who is a Jew."
As I mentioned to you, your effort to bring about the abrogation of that decree has already had an impact, and may G-d grant that this initial encouraging reaction should be followed up by further and increased efforts to bring about the desired results. Indeed, our Sages observed: "He who has 100 desires 200," etc., meaning that ambition grows with accomplishment. I am therefore hopeful that what you have already accomplished in this direction will spur you on to an even more intensive effort, and the Zechus llorabim will surely stand you in good stead, especially as it concerns a decree which undermines the very basis of the Jewish people, G-d forbid.
To conclude on a good note - Am Yisroel Chai - the Jewish people lives, because it is bound up with the Living G-d through His living Torah, and may the time come soon when each and every one of us would concentrate our best efforts only on good things to help make them better.
