Greeting and Blessing:
I was pleased to be informed by our Rabbi Benjamin Klein that the eye operation you had undergone was successful, and may G-d grant you a speedy and complete recovery.
Perhaps you have heard of the episode related by my father-in-law of saintly memory when, as a small child, he asked his father why G-d gave man two eyes. His father replied to the effect that with the right eye one should see the good and positive qualities of a fellow Jew, and with the left eye one should look negatively at distracting material things (this is not an exact translation of the story, but rather of the content it conveys). In light of this, I send you my prayerful wishes that you should have complete sight in both eyes in the plain sense, as well as in the sense of their spiritual function indicated above. Indeed, medicine has finally come to the conclusion that both eyes are interdependent in some respects. This is true also in the spiritual sense, for perfect sight calls for the predominance of the spiritual over the material.
Inasmuch as you are a successful communal worker, I trust that this quality will not only be included in your communal activities, but will set an example for many others to emulate.
Wishing you a bright Chanukah and a growing measure of light in all your affairs,
With blessing,
M. schneerson
