Sholom uBrocho:
This is to confirm receipt of your letter of 26 Tishrei, with enclosure.
I have not at hand the file and the material which was the subject of my reference in my previous letter to you. As I recall, it was not in the form of a booklet, but a multigraph (mimeograph), which dealt mainly with the matter of your membership in the Chaplaincy Committee.1 Included was also "Clause 43," enclosed in your present letter. I received the material at the end of summer and it came to my attention apparently through one of our British Lubavitchers.
At any rate, the important thing is that, as I see from your letter, you are in agreement with "my" view, that whenever possible it is advisable to work from within, when a great deal more can be achieved than from without. Provided, of course, that it does not give a "Hechsher" on matters that cannot be approved or condoned.2
Referring specifically to the material you now sent, which, in substance I had already seen, as noted above - there is not much that I can add to what I have already written, especially in view of the fact that about two years have already elapsed, and you are after all on the spot and can fully assess whatever developments have taken place in the interim. I can only reiterate that the guiding principle should be as above, namely, that the Halacha cannot be compromised, of course, but working within a communal forum is more effective, provided it is not misconstrued as a Hechsher on matters that are not kosher.
With blessing,
M. Schneerson
