By the Grace of G-d 14 Shevat, 5738 Brooklyn, N.Y.
The Honorable Mr. David Roysen1
S.P., Brasil
Greeting and Blessing:
I trust you had a pleasant return trip home and are continuing your dedicated endeavors in behalf of all your constituents and for the material and spiritual wellbeing of your city, with ever growing success.
I take this opportunity of expressing to you, also in writing, my pleasure at meeting with you on the occasion of the recent Farbrengens,2 and may G-d grant many more such auspicious occasions in the future.
For your personal interest in, and cooperation with, our Chabad-Lubavitch institutions and activities for the dissemination of Torah-true Yiddishkeit in your city - it would be superfluous on my part to say "thank you,” since, as our Sages say, "the reward of a Mitzvah is the Mitzvah itself," and the many more Mitzvos that follow each other in sequence. But I want you to know that I appreciate very much all you have done in the past, and will surely continue to do in the future, even in a greater measure, in keeping with the principle of our Torah that all things of goodness and holiness should be on the ascendancy. It is particularly gratifying to note the spirit of enthusiasm and warmth permeating these activities.
I am enclosing copies of my letters of acknowledgment to the Mayor3 and to the President of the Gamara Municipal,4 which were sent to them direct. Having been instrumental in these contacts, you will surely be interested in the contents of the acknowledgments, and I leave it to your discretion regarding any follow-up.
I also reiterate my prayerful, washes to you and all yours, and particularly to your daughter Tzipporah in connection with her forthcoming marriage in a happy and auspicious hour.
With esteem and blessing,
M. Schneerson
Notes and sources
1) David Roysen was a member of the community council of S.P. Brazil. He became Torah observant and affiliated with Chabad through his connection with Rabbi Shabse Alpern, an emissary of the Rebbe to Brazil. He staunchly supported the work of Chabad in Brazil, and in addition to regularly corresponding with the Rebbe, he encouraged his colleagues to do so as well.
For additional letters addressed to him, see letters dated 20 Shevat 5740, and 6 Elul 5744.
2) In honor of Yud-Shevat, David Royse, together with a large delegation of Brazilian Jews, traveled to the Rebbe.
3) During the visit, he merited to have a private audience with the Rebbe. During the yechidus, he handed the Rebbe a scroll that declared the Rebbe as “Citizen of the Year” of S. Paulo, accompanied by a letter from the city's mayor.
4) Addressed on the same day as this letter (can be accessed here).
