By the Grace of G-d20th of Kislev, 5738Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs. . . .
West Glover, Vt. 05875
Blessing and Greeting:
I duly received your letter.
Our G-d-given Torah — which is called Toras Chayim and Toras Emes, because it is the Jew’s guide in life and all its teachings are the real truth — has a very clear position on abortion, namely, that it is strictly forbidden (except in a case where the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother).
This is not, as some persons may think, an “old fashioned idea,” as you mention, but a Divine law, clearly and unanimously set forth in the halocho and obligatory on all Jews.
I trust there is no need to elaborate on it further to you. Of course, if you wish to go into more detail and if you think that it will ease you mind, you may consult an orthodox Rabbi.
At this time approaching the bright festival of Chanukah, celebrated by lighting the Chanukah Lights in growing number each night of Chanukah, symbolizing the need to spread the light of Yiddishkeit, Torah and mitzvos both at home and outside — may G-d grant that this should be so with you and your family and together with it a growing measure of brightness in all aspects, materially and spiritually.
Wishing you and yours a bright and inspiring Chanukah,
With blessing,
