Dear Mr. Stulman
On the threshold of Rosh Hashona, I wish to extend to you and all yours, on behalf of the Merkos L’ Inyonei Chinuch and myself, our wishes for a very happy New Year.
The founder of Chabad (and father of the Schneersohn family), Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liady, writes in one of his pastoral letters (Tanya IV:14) that every Rosh Hashona a new and higher - than in all previous years - Divine "Light" emanates from on High and this "Light' vitalizes all the Universe during the entire new year. However, the "Revelation" of this Light is dependent upon the actions in our lower world.
As I have already mentioned in my previous letter,1 the true development of each thing is the progress in the "Revelation" of the Divine spark - a particle of this Light - which vitalizes every being individually.
And from these words of our great Master we learn that the possibility for bringing about this "Revelation," and thus development and progress, increases progressively every year, and not merely quantitatively but also qualitatively (note the word ‘a new and higher Light’).
May G-d help each one of us in the new year to attune our life to the fulfillment of the great task which Supreme Providence has imposed upon each of us, and thus attain our true happiness,
With best wishes for a "Ksiva Vachasimah Tovah,"
Very sincerely yours,
M. Schneerson
