Dear Mr. Stulman:
Your letter of the 26th1 with enclosure was received with great satisfaction and deep gratitude. It brought us a great deal of encouragement to carry on with increased concerted efforts the extensive and ramified activities of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch both here and overseas, which, since the end of the war, have been even more extended to cover also the liberated areas of Europe.2
I refer not only to your important financial contribution, but also to the message contained in your letter in the words "There are no words, nor am I capable of expressing by deeds, my full understanding of the importance of the work you are doing, etc." On these words of yours, so full of feeling and meaning, I wish to comment as follows:
You surely remember, that my venerable father-in-law שליט”א has frequently blessed you, that the Almighty grant you success to realize in deed all your good thoughts, intentions and ambitions, no doubt your spiritual qualities are a suitable "vessel" to receive these good blessings, so that they may fully materialize not only for your own sake, but also for the sake of the many who benefit from your good deeds. All the more so, since you have been singled out by the Rabbi שליט”א to be one of the privileged few, יחידי סגולה the "treasured individuals" taking a full measure of responsibility in helping to carry out the broad program of the Rabbi שליט”א. This surely means that my venerable father-in-law שליט”א has recognized in you the qualities of your Nefesh Elokis (Divine soul) as being of a high order and in constant process of growth and development which will, no doubt, find expression, among other things, also in your participation in our work which is likewise undergoing a process of steady growth, thank G-d.
I will conclude on the subject I dwelt upon in my previous letters,3 namely, that every Jew is a Sanctuary for the Shechinah (Divine Presence). The Midrash on this week's portion of the Torah relates that after the Mishkan had been erected and dedicated and the sacrifices offered therein, Israel was blessed that the Shechinah would rest in the Sanctuary.4
To explain this briefly (since I hope that we will have an opportunity to go into this matter at greater length when we meet personally soon, please G-d):
Man has the ability of continuous advancement and in such a way, that in the course of his progress each former status serves as a kernel for the development of the next stage.
Yet, as a created and finite being, he is, taken by himself alone, limited in his advancement and ascent.
However, when he fulfills all that is within his power to fulfill and attain, then the Shechina comes to abide in all his work, granting him new, enhanced, and Divinely-inspired powers over and above his own limited ones he possessed before.
Similarly, in your own case, I trust that, by doing all that is within your powers to achieve, the Almighty will bless you with new and special powers to carry out in deed all that lies within your domain to carry out.
Let me assure you on behalf of the Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and in my own behalf of our sincere appreciation of your important and far-reaching cooperation.
With kindest personal regards and best wishes,
Very sincerely yours,
M. Schneerson
Chairman, Executive Committee5
