Notes and sources
Following Rebbetzin Chana’s escape from the end of the previous year (see telegrams Sep. 12 1946, and as noted there), the Rebbe was in contact with Rabbi Gorodetzky regarding his mother’s plight (see Rabbi Gorodetzky’s letter published in HaYetziah MeRussia p. 278). Shortly before this telegram was written, Rebbetzin Chana had moved from Poland to the displaced persons camp of Pocking, in the American-occupied zone of Germany (see Igros Kodesh of the Rebbe Rayatz vol. 9, letter 2950), and the Rebbe elicited Rabbi Gorodetski’s help in obtaining a French visa for her.
1) Rabbi Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodetzky (5668–5755) had escaped the USSR a little in Tammuz 5706, and was then living in Paris. Rabbi Gorodesky was then involved in assisting the Lubavitch refugees in Europe and obtaining visas for them. He later served as the Rebbe’s official representative to Europe.
2) Two days later, on the 25th of Cheshvan, the Rebbe wrote a letter to Rabbi Gorodezky reiterating the contents of this telegram, as well as providing instructions for facilitating her move to France (Ba Koach, p. 35). For further communications with Grodetzky regarding the Rebbe’s mother, see the following telegrams; Hebrew letter dated 3 Kislev 5707 (Ibid, p. 212).
