The American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee
270 Madison Avenue
New York, N.Y.
Gentlemen:
I am informed by our representative in Paris, Rabbi B. Gorodetzki,1 that an agreement has been reached with your office in Paris to provide 1000 lbs of Shemurah flour for Pesach for France.
As you readily understand, the time element is of importance, and it is therefore to be hoped that your Supply Department will expedite this shipment with the utmost dispatch.
Two reliable sources of Shemurah flour which, I am informed, have Shemurah flour available immediately are: Rabbi Meyer Horowitz, 121 Pitt Street, New York 2, N.Y. and I. Eichenthal, 170 Rivington Street, New York, N.Y.2
Your understanding cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you also in anticipation of your advice regarding the above.
Sincerely yours,
Rabbi Mendel Schneerson
Son-in-law
Notes and sources
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is a humanitarian organization that has financed and facilitated humanitarian, social, and religious aid for Jews around the globe. From the onset of its establishment (in 1914) "the JDC was always ready and willing to support Lubavitch in its... work in behalf of the Jewish community." After the formation of the Soviet Union, the Joint turned to the Rebbe Rayatz, the de facto leader of Soviet Jewry, to distribute their funds behind the Iron Curtain. To see the correspondences of the Rebbe Rayatz with the JDC over the years see Igros Kodesh, Rayatz, index entry Joint. For more on the "JDC-Lubavitch cooperation" see letter dated 27th of Iyar, 5713.
1) Rabbi Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodetzki (5668-5755) was the Rebbe's representative to Eretz Yisrael, Europe and North Africa, and a member of Agudas Chassidei Chabad Ha'olami. As director of the European Lubavitch Bureau, he worked closely with the JDC to help the Jews of those countries. Numerous letters to Rabbi Gorodetzki can be found in Igros Kodesh.
2) For several years, the JDC would inquire of the Rebbe regarding reliable sources where to obtain Shemurah-flour for Pesach. See Letters dated 1 Shevat, and 2 Shevat, 5711.
