By the Grace of G-d First Day of Rosh Chodesh1 Marcheshvan, 30th of Tishrei, 5747. Brooklyn, N.Y.
To the Sons and Daughters of
Our People Israel, Everywhere -
G-d bless you all!
Greeting and Blessing:
On this day, at the conclusion2 of the month of Tishrei3 and the beginning of Marcheshvan,4 it is particularly fitting to make a resume of the outgoing5 first6 and introductory month of the new year — with the assuredness7 that it has brought for all of us, “in the midst of all our Jewish People” a Kesivo vaChasimo Toivo for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.8 This review should, of course, be a complete one9 by culminating in very firm basic resolutions on our part for the days and months of the whole new year ahead of us.
In connection with the above, attention will be centered on the special aspects of the current new year as well as of the year following it, so that this year should be a proper preparation also for the year following it that it, too, should be as complete as possible.
I shall dwell briefly on two such special aspects, which are correlated.
The first is the fact that this year — 5747 — is a year of Shemittah,10 a “Sabbatical Year.”11 The Torah—called Toras Chayim12 because it is the guide and source of Jewish life — declares: When13, you come into the land which HaShem gives you, ...six years you shall plant your field...but in the seventh year shall be a solemn rest for the land, a Shabbos unto HaShem.
The other special feature, which is connected with the first, is the Mitzvah of Hakhel which was observed (in the time of the Beis Hamikdosh) at the end of the Shemittah year, immediately after its conclusion as stated in the Torah: At the end14 of every seven years, during the festival of Succot (of the year following Shemittah)...15 there shall be a gathering together (“Hakhel”) of the people, men, women, and children,16 that they should hear and learn to fear HaShem your G-d, and faithfully do all the words of this Torah...
* * *
The significance of the Shemittah year is similar to that of the Shabbos day. As in the case of the seventh day of the week, which the Creator blessed and made holy,17 so He blessed and sanctified every seventh year18 of the seven-year cycle.19
Although20 the cessation of work on Shabbos is total and everywhere,21 while the cessation of work in the Shemittah year is limited to agricultural activity and only in the Holy Land, one underlying basic element is the same in both: by ceasing to engage in usual every day activities, physical activity during the seventh day and the seventh year, the Jew shows that there is a Creator22 and Master of the world, who oversees and manages all its affairs, and holds every human being to account for his or her conduct. But this evidence,23 based as it is on inactivity (abstention from work), is not enough. Having been released from time and much energy-consuming physical activity during these hallowed periods, every Jew is expected to devote24 the “freed” extra time to what is truly the essential aspect of human live, namely, the spiritual pursuits, such as prayer, Torah study, perfection in good middos and feelings and other activities of the soul — over and above his quotas in these areas on work days.
* * *
The fact25 that the laws of Shemittah pertaining to agricultural activity apply only in the Holy Land26 and not outside the Land of Israel, does not diminish the spiritual content of Shemittah in terms of the practical instructions and applications of the year of Shemittah for each and every Jew wherever he or she lives.
The same is true of the Mitzvah of Hakhel, the actual performance of which is limited to the time and place of the Beis Hamikdosh, but the practical message of this Mitzvah — to see to it that all our Jewish people, men, women, and children, should hear and learn to fear HaShem and to faithfully keep and observe the Torah and Mitzvos—is timeless. Indeed, one might say that the Mitzvah of Hakhel in its comprehensive meaning is an imperative not only once in seven years, but every year, every month, and every day. Fear and love of HaShem are continuous27 Mitzvos during all hours of the life of a Jew and are to be expressed in concrete terms of carrying out HaShem’s commandments with kabbolas-ol (personal submission) coupled with joy and gladness of heart.
Basically all the above is every Jew’s duty and privilege also in ordinary years, including the precept of keeping all things of holiness on the ascendancy.28 But in a year of Shemittah, as the current year, special efforts are called for to increase substantially all activities relating to Yiddishkeit, Torah and Mitzvos, both in one’s personal everyday life and in the family, as well as in the community at large, to the fullest extent of one’s ability.29
There is an added significance and emphasis to all that was noted above in that the first day of this year, the first day of Rosh Hashanah (“Head”30 of the year), occurred on the holy Shabbos day, thus imbuing the whole year, and every day of this Shabbos year with an extra measure of holiness and inspiration.
* * *
May HaShem grant that the good resolutions made most firmly in all the above for the immediate days ahead and thereafter, and the implementation of same in terms of concrete action — which is the essential thing,31
Should bring even closer the fulfillment of the prophecy and prayer: Show us,32 HaShem, Your Kindness and give us Your Deliverance etc. to dwell with honor in our Land,
And, to use the well-known prayer and blessing of our Sages:33 In your days and in ours may Yehuda be delivered and Yerushalayim dwell securely, speedily in our own days. Amen, so be it G-d’s Will.
With esteem and blessing for
Hatzlocho in all above,
/Signed: Menachem Schneerson/
