By the Grace of G-dRosh Chodesh Tammuz, 5742Brooklyn, N.Y.
Prof. . . .
Greeting and Blessing:
It is some time since I heard from you. I trust all is well. Of course, insofar as a Jew is concerned “all is well” means that this assessment is in full accord with the Torah, including the mitzvah of spreading Yiddishkeit in the fullest measure.
What prompts me to write to you at this time is that I have just received information from Eretz Yisroel that a questionnaire is being sent out to scientists regarding their view on the theory of evolution in light of the principle of probability, namely, the probable period of time it would take for evolution to evolve.
Inasmuch as there are few scientists who are expert in the science of the probability theory, particularly scientists of renown, whose opinion is influential in scientific circles, it would be highly desirable and, indeed, in the public interest (zechus horabbim), that you, as a well known authority in this field, should write a scientific paper outlining your view on the said subject.
Especially as it is my understanding - on the basis of certain authoritative sources - that from the viewpoint of probability, the process of evolution would require a great deal more time that geologists estimate to be the maximum age of the earth.
Needless to say, for those who believe in Divine creation, there is no need for any proof other than the Torah, Toras Emes. However since it is our duty to strengthen this belief in every Jew, regardless of his Torah knowledge, and since many a Jew would be impressed to find support for Jewish commitment to the Torah and mitzvos also from scientific quarters, we must not ignore the opportunity that has presented itself.
If for any reason whatever you find it inconvenient to publish the suggested paper in your own name, perhaps it can be published under an assumed name, or anonymously, except for the full academic credentials, degrees etc., with a footnote to the effect that the name of the author is on file with the Society of Orthodox Jewish Scientists in Eretz Yisroel
Or, if complete anonymity be desired, the footnote could be to the affect that the article was written by a prominent Jewish scientist who desires anonymity, but whose expertise on the subject is obvious from the contents.
May G-d grant that the Torah, Torah Or, should permeate every Jew's life to the degree that there would be no need for discussions and debates, in accordance with the prophecy:
And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor and every man his brother, saying, “Know G-d” for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. Jeremiah 31:33
May this prophecy be fulfilled very soon in our days, with the coming of the Geulo Shleimo.
With esteem and blessing,
