By the Grace of G-d 17th of Adar, 5737 Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs.
N. Miami Beach, Fla. 33161
Blessing and Greeting:
I just received your letter, and may G-d grant the fulfillment of your heart’s desires for good in all the matters about which you write, particularly that your moving into a new apartment should be in a happy and auspicious hour and in accordance with the saying of our Sages, that the change of place should be a change for good and blessing.
I trust you will not take it amiss that I must take exception to your writing that you are not ready to raise a family until you will feel materially more settled, etc.
To be sure, our Torah, which is called Toras Emes, because it shows the emes (truth) of everything, says that a person should not rely on a miracle. But at the same time, the Torah emphasizes that children are one of the greatest blessings of G-d and indeed, the first in the order of the three main blessings, “children, health and sustenance.” Surely G-d knows when is the proper time for a Jewish couple to be blessed with children, and no one should attempt to interfere with G-d’s way. It is also certain that when G-d grants a blessing of children, He grants also the other two blessings of health and sustenance.
I will not elaborate on the above, for I believe it should suffice. I would only add a further point that even from the psychological viewpoint, interfering with the normal Jewish way of married life may have an undesirable impact.
A further point should be considered. People in general and Jews in particular do not live an isolated life, but live among other Jews, so that the conduct of one Jewish family has a greater or lesser impact on other families. Usually a neighbor or friend does not come to inquire as to the reasons for a particular conduct, but are likely to be influenced regardless. Hence, the personal conduct also carries with it a responsibility in the example one sets to others. I trust it is unnecessary to emphasize to you the significance of the most important aspect of Jewish married life, namely the observance of the laws and regulations of Taharas Hamishpocho, which G-d, the Essence of Goodness and the Source of all good, has ordained for the benefit of those who observe them, to ensure a good and contented life.
With blessing,
