By the Grace of G-d Erev Shabbos Kodesh 9th of Kislev, 5732 Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs. . . .
Downsview, Ont.
Blessing and Greeting:
I duly received your letter and enclosure which is returned herewith.
Needless to say, I share your general view and feelings in regard to undergoing an irreversible operation to preclude pregnancy.
Apart from the viewpoint of Halachah — which is the essential and determining factor, there is the psychological factor, in light of which I do not think that your own physician would advise such a drastic step.
Concerning the shaalah itself, you surely know that I do not pasken shaalot and you would have to put it before an experienced Rav Moreh Hora’ah.
I would like to point out, however, on the basis also of many medical cases which had come to my attention, that in the case where a Rav finds a hetter to avoid pregnancy, there are various effective methods, especially in the combination of two such methods, which are relatively simple. I therefore do not quite understand why you say that the surgical method you mention is the only choice.
May G-d, Whose Divine Providence extends to each and everyone individually, lead you in the way that is truly good for you in this matter also.
May G-d complete your pregnancy and grant you also a normal and easy delivery in a happy and auspicious hour.
With blessing,
