By the Grace of G-d28th of Teves, 5727Brooklyn, N.Y.

Sholom uBrocho:
My attention has been called to a recent news item in the press, wherein it was stated that you have been engaged to act as cultural director and spiritual leader of a lengthy cruise on a certain passenger liner, which is owned and operated by Jews and navigated by a Jewish crew, etc.
It is not my practice to react to press releases or to volunteer advice to individuals. However, I make an exception in this case for two main reasons. Firstly, on the basis of our meeting in the past, when I had the opportunity to get acquainted with you personally, and to note your responsible attitude and position in matters of Yiddishkiet. Secondly, in view of the fact you are not a private individual, but a person identified with religious leadership far beyond the precincts of your community.
You surely cannot be unaware of the fact that there is no hetter to travel on a Jewish ship — owned, operated and navigated by Jews — on Shabbos. If (G-d forbid) you should travel on such a ship, especially in the capacity of religious and spiritual director of a commercially advertised and publicized cruise, it would inevitably create a tremendous chilul Hashem and, moreover, a most regrettable and irreparable michshol for very many Jews whose minds have been deliberately confused on this matter by interested parties.
In view of the above, I was greatly surprised at the said news item. I earnestly hope that there is some misunderstanding involved here, and I would very much appreciate your letting me know what the facts are.
With blessing,
