By the Grace of G-d 12th of Iyar 5729 Brooklyn, N.Y.
Greeting and Blessing:
It was thoughtful of you to inform me of your reaction to my expressed views on the question of the most reprehensible light of Jews from Jewish neighborhoods. In the Pardes, no. 7, of this year, there will be a fuller report on the same subject, for understandable reasons I could not be as outspoken as I would have wished on certain aspects of the situation.
I was pleased to note your interest in this subject, knowing that you have considerable influence in certain circles. I believe that any Jew who has a position of prominence and leadership in the community should take this matter up, and use his utmost influence to stop the stampede.
Moreover, it is not a question of saving any one particular section, but it is a matter that concerns many sections in many cities. furthermore, it involves a whole trend and attitude, and touches on the basic question: should a Jew feel so insecure in the presence of a non-Jew and should he have an inferiority complex in regard to any non-Jew, and very often one whose only “excellence” is that he is non-jew?
There is much to be said on this tragic phenomenon, and I hope you will utilize your gifts and opportunities to express yourself publicly and strongly on these topics, and “Words coming from the heart penetrate the heart” and are eventually productive.
With blessing,
M. Schneerson
