By the Grace of G-d 20th of Marcheshvan, 5725 Brooklyn, N.Y.
Greeting and Blessing:
I am directed to acknowledge receipt of your letter, in which you inquire as to the Kashruth of a certain liqueur.
May we state in reply, firstly, that your question should be directed to a Rov whose function it is to Pasken Shaalos of this Nature.
Secondly, there is no basis for the assumption that any particular liqueur has any particular significance to a particular movement, in regard to its use or abstention. Even where a thing is permissible for consumption, yet anyone who desires to take a "stricter" view and abstain from it, one can certainly do so, and it will in no way affect his relationship to the particular movement.
Judging by the tenor of your letter, the opportunity is taken to express the hope, that you have regular appointed times for the study of Torah, both Nigleh, as well as the inner aspects of the Torah, namely Chassidus, bearing in mind that all matters of holiness should be on the ascendancy.
With blessing,
Secretary
Notes and sources
This letter is in reply to a Bachur, that learned in the Gateshead Yeshiva, raising concerns regarding the Kashrus of Benedictine (a liquor that was frequently used by the Rebbe's Farbrengens). It is interesting to note that upon receiving the letter, the recipient, as he had then related, was more astonished by the Rebbe's request - to set times for Torah study - than the actual reply itself, for at that time he had not learned for already three years.
