By the Grace of G-d 20th of Menachem Av, 5718 Brooklyn, N. Y.
Mr. Samuel Lou 1
c/o Lubavitcher Yeshivah
5265 Park Avenue
Montreal, Canada
Greeting and Blessing:
Your letter, which you wrote before departure for Montreal, was delivered to me. As requested, I will again remember you in prayer when visiting the holy resting place of my father-in-law of saintly memory, that you have success in your study of the Torah and Chassidus, and in the observance of the Mitzvoth, as well as in all your needs.
I trust that you parted with your parents on excellent terms, but I would be glad to hear from you explicitly that this was so.
With blessing,
By (secretary)
Notes and sources
1) Rabbi Shmuel Lew (b. 5700 / 1940) was born to a frum Lithuanian family and gradually grew close to Lubavitch. Encouraged by the Rebbe to forgo secular studies and remain in yeshiva, he eventually decided to enroll in Tomchei Temimim. In Elul 5717 (1957), he wrote to the Rebbe seeking guidance, noting his father's objections to his decision. The Rebbe responded: he should choose between Newark or Montreal per Rabbi Mentlik’s advice, הדיבור עם אביו שיחי' מיוסד על תוכן נוסח ברכת הזן [discussiwith your father should be based on birkas hazan (the first bracha in birkas hamazon which highlights that G-d provides for all)].
