By the Grace of G-d6th of Teveth, 5716Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mrs. ...
Asbury Park, N.J.
Blessing and Greeting:
I received your letter of December 6th, and enclosure, concerning which you ask whether you should participate in the building fund for a synagogue in Ocean Township, which your husband and a few other men started, but which resulted in a split between the orthodox and conservatives.1
If your question is whether to support the orthodox group, obviously such support is praiseworthy. However, if your question is whether to support the conservative drive, it is even more obvious that the answer is in the negative.
I take this opportunity to tell you that I am very gratified to receive good reports about your son ... and his wife, and the fine reputation they enjoy in Bridgeport.
With prayerful wishes that the Almighty give you much Nachas from your children in good health and long life.
With blessing,
M. Schneerson
Notes and sources
The Jewish Center of the Township of Ocean, a congregation comprised of members who were inclined to both Orthodoxy and Conservative Judaism, had recently purchased land for a new synagogue. Around this time, the congregation voted to lower their standard of observance in fitting with their Conservative values, causing several Orthodox members to leave.
